AbstractCerrado, the second largest Brazilian biome and present in 57% of the state of Minas Gerais, presents itself as an important area threatened by the level of impacts that has been affecting its biodiversity loss. In this context, the objective of this research is to evaluate the distribution of land use and natural vegetation cover in the Cerrado of Minas Gerais state which covers part of six important whatersheds in Brazil: Doce River, Grande River, Jequitinhonha River, Paranaíba River, Pardo River and São Francisco River. Its possible to notice that among the natural vegetation cover classes, the watershed of Paranaíba River presents the highest percentage of Gallery forest/riparian (Fa) and semideciduous dry Forest (Fs), corresponding to nearly 8% of the watershed area. Among the classes of anthropogenic use, its possible to notice the highlight Grande Rivers watershed related to classes of Agriculture (Ac) and Pasture (Ap), presenting about 72% of its area covered by these use classes. These and other research results show that, although the areas of remaining natural vegetation in the Cerrado in Minas Gerais state is still present in a higher percentage in most of the watershed studied, they are fragmented, which reduces the protection of the biodiversity in this area of this Biome considered as a priority conservation area.
